Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed the UK will provide Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine during a call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"The prime minister and President Zelenskyy welcomed other international commitments in this vein, including Poland's offer to provide a company of Leopard tanks. "Recently, some of our fellow citizens consider it possible to insult Russia, its inhabitants, soldiers and officers, and openly support villains, Nazis and murderers," Mr Volodin said.Mr Volodin said the existing legal responses to combat extremism,"rehabilitation of Nazism" or discrediting the armed forces - which is already punishable in Russia with fines and jail terms - were not sufficient to deal with these foreign-based"reprobates".
"Our emergency services units and energy workers are working to liquidate the consequences and stabilise the situation with energy supplies," he said. Russia said on Friday that its forces had taken control of Soledar, in what would be a rare success for Moscow after months of battlefield reverses, but Kyiv said its troops were still fighting in the town.These images show Ukrainian border guards at their positions near the border with Belarus.
In an interview with the Associated Press, first deputy foreign minister Emine Dzhaparova cautioned that many factors needed to be in place for Mr Zelenskyy to attend the meeting, citing the military situation on the ground and a warning from Ukraine's intelligence service that Russia is planning"a very serious offensive in February".
But in Ukraine's capital Kyiv, where blackouts and power rationing have become a feature of winter life, the need for humour as a means of escape remains, according to Sky News Ukraine War Diarist, Oksana Koshel. "The enemy is attacking the capital and the region. Stay in shelters and safe places," he said in a statement on Telegram.
