Here is what life was like for medics, doctors, nurses and soldiers during 48 hours at a field hospital near the fighting in Donbas, eastern Ukraine, this summer
At a hospital near the front lines in Donbas, eastern Ukraine, the sound of artillery is almost constant and events are routine—an ambulance or SUV arrives with wounded soldiers, some just scratched, others pale and badly injured.
The patients are stabilized when possible and then transferred to better-equipped hospitals in safer territory. After two hours of nonstop shelling, nine wounded soldiers arrive at the hospital along with three others who were killed in action. Soldiers in the hospital corridors are often dazed and exhausted as army officials record their names and command units. The hospital is staffed largely by “hospitaliers,” a volunteer battalion of medics, supported by local nurses, military staff and international volunteers.A military nurse looks for identification in the pants of a seriously wounded soldier in the operating room.
A military nurse sleeps on a bench in the corridor next to a pile of clothes collected from dead and wounded soldiers.
