Labour has accused the Government’s “broken military procurement system” of exposing Britain to the threat from Chinese spy balloons, after it emerged that a delivery of new surveillance aircraft to the UK could be delayed by four years
The balloons are thought to be used by China to spy on sensitive military sites, though Beijing denies the claims.
“We saw Russia here in the UK with the Salisbury poisonings and other actions that they’ve taken. I think we’ve got to be realistic about the threat that these countries posed to the UK,” he told Sky News. Lord Darroch, who held the post from 2012 to 2015, said on Tuesday he was not confident in Britain’s surveillance capabilities because “we have underinvested in defence for the last couple of decades”.
