Ministers commit to the ban after concern over a takeover by an investment fund majority owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Foreign governments face being banned from owning British newspapers and magazines in a move by ministers that will effectively block an investment fund majority owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, vice-president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and owner of Manchester City Football Club.

As peers debated the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill in the House of Lords on Wednesday, Lord Stephen Parkinson said the Government is committed to “bringing forward an amendment to this Bill at third reading which prevents foreign state ownership” of the British press
