A new report coming out in March is set to reveal whether Sheffield is still the 'best beer city' in the world
Sheffield is hoping to defend its title as the ‘best’ in the entire world for drinking beer and real ale. The popular UK city was first named the real ale capital of the world back in 2016 thanks to 'best UK beer city' report.
The 2016 report, written by Pete Brown, stated the Sheffield City Region had a booming beer trade of 57 breweries, 31 of which opened in the five years leading up to the report. Within Sheffield, around 400 different, unique beers were available in the city's pubs on a typical day. “Sheffield having pioneered the beer revolution now taking place across Britain – is in danger of being eclipsed in other cities, especially in the realm of craft beer,” said the report’s author, Pete Brown, at the time of publication.
Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City, Culture and Public Engagement at the University of Sheffield, who commissioned the report, said: “The first report had a huge impact on how Sheffield is seen, particularly in terms of the visitor economy. But the numbers in it are now nearly eight years out of date. It’s clear that the report is valuable, so we need an updated version.”
