University of Houston Chancellor Renu Khator attended a tailgate party in San Antonio...
On HoustonChronicle.com:The success of the men’s basketball team isn’t new to Khator or the city of Houston - the Cougars made the Sweet 16 three years in a row and are poised to play in the Elite Eight for the second consecutive year. But that level of play has been a long time coming, Khator said, following years of pouring millions of dollars into the school’s athletic programs without seeing a major payoff.
“They’re better than they were when I was in school,” she said. “It just gives you a lot more pride.” Many fans added that they don’t feel the University of Houston is a household name in sports just yet, making the March Madness wins more rewarding. “It’s a great day for the school, the city - having a program that’s so established and has a great leader,” said Dunn, a 51-year-old who earned his Ph.D at UH.in recent years to raise its profile and rival Power Five schools That isn’t lost on students and alumni, especially those who criticize universities when they see high dollar amounts attached to sports and not financially struggling academic programs.
Wright, 48, remembered that UH students spoke often the increasing sports investments during his time obtaining his Ph.D. in the early and mid-2000s. UH has become a brand since then, he said.
