New federally funded effort seeks to formalize the work of 'trusted messengers'
During the coronavirus pandemic, people considered “trusted messengers” in their communities showed a strong ability to educate the public about vaccination, and a new nationwide initiative seeks to leverage that progress by creating a more formal certification for community health workers.
“This training is much more impactful if that community trust already exists, then the training just helps layer on skills and tools they need to serve as effective community health workers,” Al-Delaimy said. “We’re looking for that commitment to taking all of the training and staying with this program over the three years that it takes.”
Those who have strong voices in these communities, and especially those who are bilingual, are preferred to participate in the program, which is expected to include about 90 hours of instruction in its first year followed by two years of assistance getting practical experience through apprenticeship and, eventually, a job.
