Uber has defended its decision to send thousands of JUMP electric bikes and scooters to a scrapheap instead of donating or selling them after Lime acquired the e-bike business earlier this month
, and as people look for alternative methods of transportation amid social distancing measures.Uber confirmed on Wednesday that its Uber JUMP-branded e-bikes and e-scooters collected from around the U.S. had been sent for metal recycling and to have the electronic components properly disposed of.
Lime acquired Uber’s JUMP scooter and bike business earlier this month as part of a $170 million funding round. “We explored donating the remaining, older-model bikes, but given many significant issues — including maintenance, liability, safety concerns, and a lack of consumer-grade charging equipment — we decided the best approach was to responsibly recycle them,” Uber said in a statement to NBC.Chief critics
