The UAW strike could spread to more sites on Friday if progress isn't reached, the union said Wednesday.
United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain is scheduled to address union members at 10 a.m. Eastern time on Friday and could announce new strike targets if there’s no progress in the negotiations, the union said Wednesday.
Thousands of autoworkers at Ford Motor Co. F, -0.48%, General Motors Co. GM, +0.12% and Stellantis NV STLA, -0.36% have been on strike since Sept. 14, and last Friday, during a similar address by Fain, the union expanded the labor action to dozens of GM and Stellantis distribution centers, hobbling the automakers’ repair networks.
The UAW has called the strategy a “stand up” strike, breaking with a longstanding tradition of striking at all the facilities of only one carmaker. Fain’s address is expected to be webcast on Facebook Live and the union’s YouTube channel. See also: UAW strike brings fight to consumers, worsening car-parts shortages already plaguing the industry
Shares of Ford, which was spared a second wave of labor action because it made concessions to the autoworkers, edged lower on Wednesday, alongside shares of Stellantis, which dropped 0.7%. GM’s stock bucked the trend, however, to inch 0.3% higher in late trading, in line with the S&P 500 SPX.
