American hopes stayed alive at the Qatar World Cup on Friday following the most un-American of results: a scoreless tie against England. The result leaves the Americans needing to beat Iran on Tuesday to advance to the round of 16.
AL KHOR, Qatar—American hopes stayed alive at the Qatar World Cup on Friday following the most un-American of results: a scoreless tie against England.
“I hope we made a lot of people proud, but the job’s not even close to done,” U.S. playmaker Christian Pulisic said. England had begun the game comfortably, but the offense that put six goals past Iran in its first game seemed to sputter against a more compact American defense. U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner had only one challenging save to make all night, sprawling to his right to turn away a low effort from Mason Mount. The England fans were even harsher with their own team, booing them off the field at the final whistle.
“Tonight didn’t surprise me one bit,” England manager Gareth Southgate said. “I knew it would be a highly motivated team. They’ve got a lot of players who play in England. They’ve got coaching staff who’ve spent time in England.”
