The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold an urgent debate on racism and police brutality in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. The United States is no longer a member of the council.

The proposal, made by a group of African countries led by Burkina Faso, was approved on Monday by the U.N.'s top human rights body. Protesters have rallied in the U.S. and around the world against racism and police brutality following the death of George Floyd. The black man died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes in Minneapolis on May 25.
