Paddy Lynch of Cavan, Derry’s Paudie McGrogan, Barry O’Hagan of Down and Limerick hurler Peter Casey have all suffered serious season-ending injuries in the last week
Tyrone coach Joe McMahon has called for an overhaul of the fixtures schedule to address serious player welfare issues. The double All-Ireland winner said the GAA must act to reduce the demands being placed on amateur gaelic footballers by a condensed programme of games.
“They talk about player welfare and all the rest, but they need to consider the welfare of the players, and particularly when you look at the league and Division One, the level that we’re playing at, and then you’re straight in to a provincial championship, and the way that Ulster has been and will always be, the intensity that it brings there.
Following an epic Ulster SFC quarter-final clash with Cavan, the Red Hands were pressed into semi-final action against Donegal seven days later. “But that’s something that’s out of our control. With the fixture list, we just go with it, but I think it’s something that the GAA seriously need to look at.”
