'Mind-blowing to me': The U of S Huskies HuskieWBB repeated as Canada West hoops champs, with a thrilling win Saturday over the University of Winnipeg
“To win five championships in six years is just mind-blowing to me,” said a beaming U of S head coach Lisa Thomaidis, whose Huskies overcame an early 19-8 deficit on their way to a 68-59 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in the Canada West final before a packed house at the Physical Activity Complex.
“It’s just going to help us with seeding purposes. It’s just a great confidence builder going in as the CanWest champions. I’m so proud of these guys — this team is amazing.”Their star-studded lineup rolled out to a 19-10 lead at the end of the opening quarter and had the Huskies on their heals somewhat.Article content
“She’s unbelievable,” said Thomaidis. “She’s such a great athlete. She’s still growing and learning this game and, to her credit, she stuck with it. She had a bit of a tough go but we sure needed her today. What a great performance.” “It did not come easy, that’s for sure. We had to rely on our defence because the offence was a bit of a grind, but that’s been our identity all year — just our tough defence. I thought we started to do some things in the second half that we talked about needing to do for the whole game. We bought in and got key baskets when we needed them.”
“It’s amazing,” Ahlstrom said, dedicating the win to the team’s senior graduates. “It’s such a great opportunity back on home court and I’m so happy with our fifth-years for this to be their last game here. It’s a special night.”
