Gary Police responded to multiple incidents over the weekend, including two men who were shot to death, another who was gravely injured, and a man talked out of violence.
Around 6:25 p.m. Saturday, officers were called to the 1100 block of Jennings Street to assist Gary Fire Department Medics with a potentially violent, possibly armed man needing medical care, Police spokeswoman Lt. Dawn Westerfield said in an email. They called for the SWAT team and a negotiator when it became clear the man was becoming more agitated as they tried to talk to him, Westerfield said.
While that was happening, officers were sent across the city — at 7:34 p.m. — to the 700 block of West 45th Avenue for a gunshot victim. There, they found a man with a life-threatening gunshot wound; the Lake County Coroner’s office later declared him dead, Westerfield said, but the victim’s name has not been released as of Sunday night.That incident appeared to be isolated, and the investigation is ongoing, she said.
A third call for service came in at 8:35 p.m. for a gunshot victim in the 200 block of Arthur Street, Westerfield said in an email. Gary Fire Department medics took the man to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus; his condition was unclear Sunday afternoon. The victim identified a person of interest, who was brought in for questioning Saturday night, she said. A second homicide victim was found around 12:55 p.m. Sunday, when officers were sent to the area of west 5th Avenue and Colfax Street. There, they found a man with a life-threatening gunshot wound in a parking lot. He was later declared dead on the scene, and the investigation is on going, Westerfield said.
