There had never been a night like this before in Philadelphia sports history. The Phillies and Eagles playing in prime time, against teams from the same city, was unprecedented. Bo_Wulf captured the scene from a popular Philadelphia sports bar:
Around 10:30, the Eagles extend their lead to what would be the final score, 29-17, when Dallas Goedert catches a 4-yard touchdown. Now maybe they can be the ignition. Someone starts the first E-A-G-L-E-S chant of the night following the successful two-point conversion, but Schwarber grounds out to second base with two men on and another rally is stunted.
When the Eagles pick up a fourth-down conversion late in the fourth quarter, it’s not quite the celebration anyone would expect for the first 8-0 start in team history. Amid claps and sporadic high-fives, one Darren Downer chimes in, “Eight-and-oh. That’s great. But the Phillies are gonna lose the f—in’ World Series.”The rest of the night is a painful tease of “The Moment” that never comes. The scene is.
In the ninth, everyone is trying to muster good vibes, even if Hoskins’ fourth strikeout of the night makes it difficult. Rally caps are on, “Let’s go Phillies” chants are shouted and everyone’s hoping for one more performance of Bryce Harper magic. After Harper is hit by Ryan Pressly’s pitch, Nick Castellanos is the winning run at the plate. Maybe this will be the moment everyone here tells their grandchildren about. The night Philadelphia was king.
Then Castellanos rolls over a 3-2 slider to the shortstop. At 12:09 a.m., the clock strikes midnight. Somewhere in the sea of dropped heads and F-bombs, a woman at the bar wearing an Eagles hat and Phillies shirt pops off her stool with the only smile in the room.
