But staff members at the Dallas Zoo were prepared to intervene in the twins’ birth. The same troubles with milk production came up after Sumini’s birth. Like her siblings, Sumini has been hand-raised.
In the wild, Sumatran tigers are solitary animals, but cubs normally stay with their mother for about a year. With larger litters, cubs stay together for a while after their mother gives them the boot, said Lisa Van Slett, associate curator of mammals at the zoo.“Close to that year or so, mom would start kind of being a little bit sassy with them and kind of encouraging them to go away,” Van Slett said. “But they would stay together for a little bit longer.
“This unique situation allows us the rare opportunity to introduce Sumini to her siblings once they are big enough,” the zoo’s post said. “This will allow all three cubs to get invaluable exposure to other tigers and learn the skills that only tigers can teach each other. Sumini and the twins will be able to stay together until they start maturing, just as a litter would in the wild.”
