For the presidency — which is expected to be close — if no candidate wins more than 50%, the vote goes to a run-off two weeks later.
Supporters wave flags as Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan holds a rally ahead of the Presidential elections in Istanbul on May 12, 2023 in Istanbul, Turkey. Erdogan will face his biggest electoral test as voters head to the polls in the country's general election.
In a possibly game-changing development, one of the four presidential candidates, Muharrem Ince, pulled out of the race Thursday. A former CHP member, he had been under heavy criticism for splitting the opposition vote in a way that would hurt Kilicdaroglu's chances. Campaign posters of the 13th Presidential candidate and Republican People's Party Chairman Kemal Kiliçdaroglu and the President of the Republic of Turkey and Justice Development Party President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are seen displayed. With such a high-stakes contest, many inside and out of the country are asking whether Erdogan may dispute the result if he does not win.
"There is so much at stake for President Erdogan and his AKP for the first time, as his 20-year rule over Türkiye may come to an end given the unified opposition has managed to maintain a strong alliance and stay on a hope-building positive campaign," said Hakan Akbas, managing director of consulting firm Strategic Advisory Services based between Istanbul and Washington.
