Cooper, a former sheriff’s deputy, told the political news outlet he was legally able to possess a firearm in an airport. His office also said that the pistol was in his bag by accident.forbid the possession of a loaded firearm in checked or carry-on baggage but permit carrying a firearm and ammunition separately in checked baggage.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the gun in Cooper's possession and held the weapon until Cooper returned from his trip. It is unclear where he was going, or what airport he was departing from.
