SFGATE columnist Rod Benson digs into the Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant's recent controversies.
between Shannon Sharpe and Tee Morant, Ja’s father, on the sidelines of a game against the Lakers; and finally, earlier this month, Morant flashing a gun on Instagram Live while partying at a nightclub in Denver.
But while some people might find Morant’s behavior baffling — how could a young superstar risk it all like that? — I find it familiar. I saw plenty of guys behave like that when I was a pro. There was one night back in 2009, when I was with my D-League team in Springfield, Massachusetts. We had a ritual back in those days: Every time we went to a new city, we would drive around and scout local bars, restaurants or anything else interesting.
Then we passed bar two. There were four dudes outside draped in head-to-toe red, down to the socks and do-rags. I didn’t see or hear a single woman. The building looked bombed out and depleted. I thought no rational person would choose bar two over bar one — except most of my teammates did. They explained to me that bar two felt comfortable. It looked like home.
