Because of coronavirus-related school closings, Betsy DeVos and President Donald Trump are waiving requirements for standardized tests this year.
The Education Department will waive federal requirements for state testing for K-12 students, due to unprecedented school shutdowns to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, President Donald Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced Friday.
Leaders in 19 states had already announced the cancellation of annual exams, or that they would seek a federal waiver from the exams, according to a tally from The 74, an education news site that tends to support education reform. By Friday, schools in almost all states had shuttered, many forcing parents into an experiment in mass home schooling. The ways in which teachers have been instructed to serve students has varied tremendously between states and even between neighboring districts.

But some school districts, such as in Philadelphia and Louisville, Kentucky, aren’t providing any online services to students at all because they fear running afoul of the law requiring equal services – and losing federal funding as a result.
“While we are operating in unprecedented times, it would be tragic to take a step back from those settled legal obligations that have been providing the necessary supports for those that need them,” she said in a statement Friday.
