Trump met the historic moment over the weekend by hiding out and ranting on Twitter

As dozens of cities across the nation, including the capital, were overwhelmed this past weekend by civil unrest stemming from the killing of George Floyd,sequestered himself in the White House, whisked at one point to an underground bunker—utterly unable to meet a defining moment for the country and negligently unwilling even to try.

has been remarkable, compounding the pain and the anxiety of a nation descending deeper into turmoil.for Floyd last week, as video of his killing by a white Minneapolis cop shocked the conscience of an already-reeling nation and escalated its racial tensions. But his cursory condolences, like so much of the performatively presidential scripts he’s mouthed the words to at other fraught moments in the last four years, were quickly overshadowed by his real feelings on the matter.

On Friday, as protesters descended on the White House, Trump, along with his wife Melania and son Barron, retreated to an underground bunker; he was not in imminent danger, officials, but he was nevertheless said to be “rattled” by the demonstrations. He put on a brave face the next morning, insisting he was never actually afraid. “I was inside, watched every move, and couldn’t have felt more safe,” he tweeted.

Any protesters who got too close “would have been greeted with the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons, I have ever seen,” the president added, evoking images—seared into the nation’s collective memory—of policeBeyond such inflammatory remarks, Trump has offered almost no public comments on the state of tumult.
