President Trump said he disagreed with government guidelines for safely reopening schools and threatened to cut off federal funding for those that remain closed
By Alex Leary Close Alex Leary July 8, 2020 12:26 pm ET WASHINGTON—President Trump said Wednesday he disagreed with current government guidelines for safely reopening schools and threatened to cut off federal funding for those that remain closed, escalating his campaign to get children back in the classroom despite a surge in coronavirus cases this summer.
The tweets came a day after Mr. Trump said he would pressure governors to get children back to school, in comments at a roundtable on school reopenings at the White House. Schools are also advised to consider closing shared spaces such as dining halls and playgrounds. These recommendations have led some schools to plan staggered schedules under which students will come to class several days a week, or several weeks in a month.
The CDC didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The White House didn’t clarify Mr. Trump’s objections to the CDC guidelines. “We’re going to be in a very good place very soon,” he said in an interview with Gray TV that aired late Tuesday, when asked about comments by Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-disease doctor, that the nation needed to step up its response to the virus.
