Back in February, Mr Trump said he 'would encourage Russia to do whatever the hell they wanted' to countries that failed to pay their share of the NATO budget
“The US should pay its fair share, not everybody else’s fair share,” he said in a televised GB News interview with Nigel Farage, the former leader of the Brexit Party. Mr Trump also claimed that “hundreds of billions” have flooded in since he took a hardline stance on other NATO members several months ago.Back in February, Mr Trump said he “would encourage Russia to do whatever the hell they wanted” to countries that failed to pay meet a defence spending target of at least 2 per cent of gross domestic product .
The country spent 3.9 per cent of its GDP on defence in 2023, more than the US, which spent 3.5 per cent, and the UK which spent 2 per cent.
