The three letters and an audio cassette tape, purporting to be the Ripper, put the hunt for the killer into disarray
ITV's The Long Shadow Yorkshire Ripper series makes it painfully clear the Wearside Jack hoax was probably the biggest red herring in the history of British criminal investigations.
"I have the greatest respect for you George, but Lord! You are no nearer catching me now than four years ago when I started. I reckon your boys are letting you down, George. They can't be much good, can they?" The man behind the recordings was finally caught in 2005, after a cold case review of the inquiry found a matching DNA sample on the gum of a licked envelope in which one of the cruel letters was received.
The Independent reported that under interview after his arrest, Humble, 50, said: " was getting on my nerves. It was on the bloody telly all the time. I shouldn't have done it. I know that - because it's evil. I do deserve jail." Humble claimed he tried to halt the Wearside Jack investigation in 1979, calling up the police and telling them it was a hoax. But his calls were discounted as they didn't believe his voice matched the person on the recording.
