A new tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, joining Tropical Storm Philippe and becoming the 17th named storm of the 2023 hurricane season.

Forecasters say it’s possible Rina could interact or merge with Philippe during the next several days. As of late Thursday morning, Philippe is producing sustained winds of 50 mph, but the storm is moving very slowly toward the west-northwest, at a pace of only 2 mph, and it is a “very disorganized and elongated storm,” the hurricane center said in its latest advisory. “A slow westward or southwestward motion is expected during the next few days.”
This is the forecast path of Tropical Storm Philippe, which has become very slow moving and disorganized, according to forecasters from the National Hurricane Center.As of now, Philippe poses no threat to land, but forecasters say they should have a better handle on its long-range track in a few days. For now, forecasters are advising people in the northern Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands to monitor the progress of the storm.
