Elba Raquel, Erin Salazar and Alyssa Wigant shared their experiences during a panel discussion for the Spark Collective at Gensler’s San Jose office.
Gensler, the architecture and design firm, hosted a panel for Women’s History Month on Thursday at its downtown San Jose office with three female artists who shared their perspectives about the city’s creative landscape.
For all three, public art has been a key part of San Jose’s growth as a creative city, along with the increasing art literacy of its residents. Of course, they’re just a few of the artists — women and men — trying to build a creative career in San Jose, something they hope that people looking for artists realize. “We have so much talent here in San Jose, we don’t need to outsource,” Raquel said.
“If one of us misplaced a stapler or something, we’d joke that maybe [fruit grower] John Giumarra, or maybe an FBI agent, broke in during the middle of the night and stole it. Very funny,” he wrote, adding that in 1969 they didn’t know that Jerry Ducote, a one-time Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputy turned private investigator, had been burglarizing anti-war groups for information on them.
