Districtwide enrollment is down 6 percent from the fall of 2019.
San Diego Unified’s enrollment is falling by 2 percent on average each year, even with new students joining the district’s expanding transitional kindergarten grade level, school district officials said last week.
The district is still building out school facilities to accommodate all interested families. About 250 students are currently on a waiting list, officials said. Enrollment changes from last school year vary by geographic area. The Hoover High and San Diego High school clusters saw the greatest drops percentage-wise, with San Diego losing 4 percent of its 2022-23 enrollment and Hoover losing 3 percent.
Board Trustee Cody Petterson urged district officials to study more of the forces within schools that are driving enrollment growth and decline — for example, are some schools losing families because of recurring behavior problems on campus? Are the district’s renovations of schools working to attract more families to those sites?
