Payment pushes Sheriff's Department costs for various misconduct allegations closer to $50 million in past five years

San Diego County has agreed to pay $275,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a transgender woman who was badly beaten after being placed in a cell with three men, her attorney said Tuesday.

Lawyer Trenton Lamere said the case represented the latest example of misconduct and mistreatment of transgender people by law enforcement and some community members at large.“This case was another tragic, yet preventable, example of such transphobic violence,” he said. “Had Ms. Frost been promptly booked and released, for example, the incident would not have occurred.

“We ask those who are being booked into our jails whether they identify as male, female or nonconforming so we can effectively meet their needs while in custody,” the statement said. The settlement was reached without any admission of liability for Frost’s injuries on the part of the county.
