Transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney addressed Bud Light in an Instagram post on Thursday.
The video came months after the beer company partnered with Mulvaney, a biological man who identifies as a woman. The company sent the influencer a commemorative beer can featuring Mulvaney's face after a celebration of their 365th day of"girlhood."The influencer admitted that the can is lost in some hidden place, but deserves to be displayed in a museum"behind bulletproof glass.
“I should have made this video months ago, but I didn’t. And I was scared. And I was scared of more backlash and I felt personally guilty for what transpired,” Mulvaney said. “So I patiently waited for things to get better. But surprise — they haven’t really. And I was waiting for the brand to reach out to me, but they never did. I've been scared to leave my house."
In the video, also posted to TikTok, Mulvaney drinks an unknown beer from a glass. Mulvaney claimed to have always liked beer, and said many in the LGBT community also enjoy drinking beer. "For a company to hire a trans person and then not publicly stand by them is worse than not hiring a trans person at all," Mulvaney went on."Because it gives customers permission to be as transphobic and as hateful as they want."Bud Light tweeted last week for the first time since it was forced to address the controversy surrounding Mulvaney. The beer company, owned by Anhesuer-Busch, went dark on Twitter after April 14.
Bud Light has launched a summer ad campaign that includes Bud Light parent company Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth going on a national tour to hear from consumers. The senior marketing officials involved with the Mulvaney promotion were subsequently placed on leave, which resulted in the company cutting ties with a third-party advertising agency.
