An embankment under the line has been significantly damaged.
Train services are already running on reduced timetables due to the ongoing rail strikes but now commuters face more misery as the West Coast Mainline, between Carlisle and Glasgow, remains "significantly damaged" following the floods that hit the region last week.
Engineers are working around-the-clock to remove landslip material affecting a 40m long section of the line before they reinforce the area with over 200 tonnes of new stone. “This is a very challenging project, but we understand the inconvenience closing the line will cause to customers and are working hard to reopen the railway as quickly as we can.”
