Debts dating back to 1997 are to be wiped off while thousands owed by traders at St Johns Market are wanted back by the council
Liverpool Council is “drawing a line under previous poor practice” as it writes off millions in bad debt and seeks to recoup thousands owed by market traders.
As part of the council’s medium term financial strategy, rent and arrears dating back to 2020 would be sought from traders at St Johns Market. Rent and service charges were reintroduced to businesses after little improvement following the botched 2016 refurbishment of the site and payments were expected.
Outlining the approach, Cllr Ruth Bennett, cabinet member for finance and deputy leader of the council, said she understood while people would be “disappointed by the headlines” the cabinet was committed to sound financial management. She added: “We are drawing a clear line under previous poor practice.”
