Caritas Jerusalem worker Viola Al ‘Amash died in St Porphyrios Church blast
Irish aid agency Trócaire has been left “devastated” after an aid worker with one of its partner organisations was killed in Gaza.
“Viola’s unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world was evident in her work at Caritas since 2021, where she served as a lab technician with the mobile medical teams, tending to the needs of the most vulnerable people in Gaza. Her heart was firmly aligned with the mission of Caritas, which was to serve and uplift the community in every way possible.
Palestinian officials said at least 500 Muslims and Christians had taken shelter in the Greek Orthodox Church. “As a result of the IDF strike, a wall of a church in the area was damaged. We are aware of reports on casualties. The incident is under review,” it said.Witnesses said however the damage inside the church was extensive.
