Kevin Stevenson, 55, and his wife Paula, 48, from New York City, said guards were trying to fine as many oblivious tourists as possible

Tourists at Santa Lucia train station in Venice on Thursday as the new day-tripper fee comes into force “We had read about it but had no idea that it had come into force, nor that we should have paid the €5 charge each on a dedicated website,” Mr Stevenson, a web designer, toldThey said guards patrolling the entrance to St Mark’s Square fined them for not having payed the fee launched by local authorities to limit crowds – despite officials saying “common sense” was being applied for the launch.

The couple felt they had been “trapped” and denied “freedom of choice and movement”, adding that the guards were very strict and in what they characterised as a frenzy to fine as many oblivious tourists as possible, taking advantage of the launch day. Silvia Analin, a member of one of the committees organising the protests, Piú Europa, said tourist numbers will remain high because many have already booked tickets, and it is fairly straightforward to pay the fee online.

Workers in yellow vests were seen on Thursday carrying out random checks at the train station, with large signs listing the 29 dates of the test phase, which lasts until the end of July.
