Tory voters’ disgust, not Parliament’s Partygate probe, will trigger Boris Johnson’s downfall. ✍️ MPs fear it could be 1997 all over again if next May’s local elections are dire. 🔵 paulwaugh for ipaperviews

Paul Waugh: ‘The Privileges Committee investigation has been tasked by the Commons to consider whether Johnson’s words to MPs “amounted to a contempt” of Parliament’ over Partygate, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was careful not to endorse that characterisation.

But Truss sidestepped it, saying instead: “I trust implicitly my Parliamentary colleagues to listen properly to the evidence and make the right decision.” Johnson’s multiple defences – that he just assumed [“implicitly”] the rules were being followed, that he was told by others no rules were broken, that he had no knowledge of many of the eventsand that he didn’t view farewell drinks as “parties” – will face intense scrutiny.

Apart from the fact that the Privileges Committee has a Tory majority, there are several reasons why claims that it is somehow rigged against the PM don’t bear much scrutiny.
