Commons will not vote on the Rwanda bill again after Easter as Lords refuse to back down in a face-off between the two chambers

until mid-April after the House of Lords approved a series of amendments to water it down this week, the Government has confirmed. One former minister said: “The nature of government is to disappoint people. The flights would be good for the electoral family that we’ve started to lose, but I don’t see them happening personally at this rate.”

Another party grandee said: “I am puzzled by why they are not bringing the bill back before Easter.” And a third Conservative MP added: “If we get some regular flights going to Rwanda, it will make a huge difference electorally, because we can go tovoters and say we’re getting the job done, so let us finish the job. But I’m almost certain it won’t happen. There won’t be flights.”” said: “It’s just frustrating when we can’t even get it through Parliament.

MPs are almost certain to vote to strip out all the Lords amendments again, setting up a fresh clash with peers who have been determined to remove clauses that allow ministers to ignore international human rights laws and limit the right of migrants to appeal against deportation to Rwanda. Home Secretary James Cleverly said: “I’m absolutely determined to get the legislation through the House to prevent Labour peers continually delaying and obstructing what I am trying to do, what the Government is trying to do – to break the business model of these criminal smuggling gangs, to deter people making those dangerousafter crossing the English Channel in dangerous small boats. The total of crossings so far this year is 10 per cent higher than the equivalent point in 2023.

Lucy Powell, Labour’s shadow Leader of the House of Commons, claimed the Government was deliberately delaying the Rwanda scheme because it was not yet ready to put it into action. She said: “The truth is, if they were ready to implement this scheme, we would see the bill back here next week. This is their timetable, it’s their delay, no one else’s.”
