Tornadoes could crash across parts of the UK today as the Met Office has issued an amber warning for Storm Debi - with high winds and heavy The UK's Tornado and Storm Research Organisation has issued a Severe Weather Forecast Tornado Watch alert and said gusts as strong as 100mph are expected, with hailstones potentially as big as 20mm also forecast, reports The Mirror.
The TORRO spokesperson added: "Strong shear, both deep layer and low level, will be present, enough for a few storms to become organised, perhaps with low-topped supercells. The very high low-level shear may allow for the development of a few tornadoes. The highest chance would appear to be in a line from SW RoI, through parts of mid/N Wales into the Midlands and eastern England, near the triple point of the system.
The Met Office has warned Brits living in those areas should be wary of solid and disruptive winds with the possibility of flying debris. Damage to buildings and structures is likely, and heavy items such as tiles blown from roofs may present a potential danger to life. Chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “Storm Debi has developed rapidly overnight and will bring impacts across parts of the UK today. Because of the particular risk of impacts to parts of County Armagh and County Down this morning and parts of northwest England through much of the day we have issued two amber wind warnings.”
