Every voter in England and Wales will be able to cast a ballot in at least one type of election on May 2, with elections in local councils as well as for mayors in cities including London.

The Tories are on course to lose more than 400 council seats in next week's local elections on a 'bad night for Rishi Sunak that could reignite questions about his leadership.

It comes as rumours swirl Westminster that Mr Sunak could trigger a general election on Monday, to be held in early June, though he has consistently said he will not hold one until the second half of 2024. There are 107 councils holding elections in England, with around a third currently expected to declare on the night of May 2, nearly two-thirds expected to declare during the day on May 3, with three due on May 4 and one on May 5.

'Wards are much smaller and many of these have either majority Muslim or ''heavily'' Muslim electorates. The Labour Party will therefore have to spend more time than would normally be the case in areas which are seen as rock solid safe for the party. Of the 107 authorities, 31 are Metropolitan boroughs, including some of the UK's biggest cities such as Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle; 18 are unitary authorities, covering a mix of towns and larger areas; and 58 are smaller district councils.

In Solihull and Walsall, again in the West Midlands, a third of seats are being elected, but the Tories could lose overall control of these councils if their vote collapses. The Greens are already the largest party in Bristol, but up to now Labour has been running the council through its directly-elected mayor.
