Second-seeded Toreros posted solid victory over Washington State in four sets before raucous home crowd. Breana Edwards had 23 kills for USD and Grace Frohling added 17.
To anyone who has dug deep into this year’s University of San Diego volleyball team, Jennifer Petrie has said this is the most talented team in her 24-year run as head coach. When asked if it’s a team capable of winning a national championship, Petrie replies with a one-word answer.
The Toreros now turn into big LSU fans. If the Tigers upset host Stanford on Saturday, USD will host the Sweet 16 and Elite 8.If Stanford wins, the Cardinal host the Sweet 16. Indiana transfer Breana Edwards led USD with 23 kills, including five of the match’s final six points. Senior Grace Frohling had 17 kills. The Toreros played excellent defense with three players recording 12 or more digs, led by libero Annie Benbow’s 14.Frohling and La Jolla High product Leyla Blackwell teamed on a block for the final point, sending the USD bench sprinting onto the floor to celebrate with the rest of the team.
“Huge congratulations to San Diego,” said Washington State head coach Jen Greeny. “They’re such a great team, well balanced. I think they’re going to go far. We had our chances, but in the end San Diego was really tough, especially their outside hitters did a fantastic job.No one was more dominant in that fourth set than Edwards, who had seven of her 23 kills.“She is unstoppable,” said Petrie. “She has that mentality. She’s extremely competitive.
“But I can’t do it without Gabby putting up those , and those balls the passers put spot on for Gabby,” said Edwards. “It’s a team effort, for sure.”
