Top-seeded Baylor routs Oklahoma State in Big 12 women’s quarterfinal
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thursday night’s Big 12 tournament opener went so well for ninth-seeded Oklahoma State that coach Jim Littell figured he’d try tinkering with the Cowgirls’ collective imagination before they faced the beast.
Baylor roared out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 90 seconds and eventually 23-0 by the end of the first quarter. Oklahoma State missed all 13 of its shots and both of its free-throw attempts.The rangy 6-foot-3 center blocked “only” one more shot, but those opening minutes set the tone and sent a brutal message: The paint was closed for business.
Smith, who received her second consecutive Big 12 player of the year award during a pregame ceremony, ripped off a personal 8-0 run early in the second half to put Baylor up by 34 after the Cowgirls chipped their deficit down to 26.Smith drew a foul on a low-block touch and hit both free throws. She lofted in a soft runner in the paint. She sent one defender stumbling with a savage crossover, then rose and nailed a buttery 15-footer.
