Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein discussed 'ways to strengthen bilateral relations' with Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
The top diplomats of neighboring Iran and Iraq have agreed to soon meet amid a series of regional developments including two back-to-back attacks against U.S. soldiers deployed to both sides of Iraq's border with Syria.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the two men discussed"issues of mutual interest, including bilateral ties, regional developments and the Vienna talks," where Tehran has sought Washington's return to a 2015 nuclear deal abandoned by then-PresidentAmir-Abdollahian also brought up the ongoing war in Eastern Europe, on which he"emphasized the need to focus on dialogue and a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine and said addressing the root causes of the current crisis...
The remarks came after reports emerged Thursday that U.S. forces had downed two drones near the Ain al-Asad Air Base in Iraq's western Al-Anbar province. In a statement, the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State militant group , a common foe to all sides, said that"U.S. air defense systems shot down an armed unmanned aerial system" near the military installation at"approximately 1:46 a.m." Friday local time.
The U.S.-led coalition did not ascribe blame for the incident, but similar attacks have been blamed by theon militias tied to Iran, which has demanded the withdrawal of all U.S. forces from the region.
