A hot hatch. On a track car list? Wind the clock back 20 years and we’d have been pelted with eggs for putting a hatchback alongside the likes of Caterham, Lotus and Porsche. But the Renaultsport Megane R26.R was among the cars that changed all that, not just by proving there’s an appetite for two-seat hatches – but by smashing lap records, too. The R26.R’s 8:17 lap around the Nurburgring obliterated the front-wheel drive record and placed it firmly alongside ‘proper’ sports cars.
So much so there isn’t currently one for sale on PH, because every time one pops up – it goes in the blink of an eye. Boy, did Porsche make us wait for a proper RS version of its mid-engined sports car. About 17 years, to be precise. Thankfully, it was well worth it, because the Cayman GT4 RS did exactly what we hoped it might: give the fast 911s a proper run for their money.
