Fairfield Lake State Park closed as Todd Interests plans a private home community. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department works to save public access.
On Monday, park staff began to remove equipment and relocate employees. If the park closes permanently, the public will lose access to two public boat ramps and a fishing pier on Fairfield Lake, a popular bass fishery. The park, spanning 1,460 acres, sits within a 5,025-acre property in Freestone County. All 5,025 acres was sold by Texas-based energy company Vistra for $110.5 million in 2021.
"Texas Parks and Wildlife Commissioners continue to pursue options for saving Fairfield Lake State Park, including through condemnation," said Commission Chairman Arch Aplin III in a statement."But in the meantime, department staff must focus on decommissioning the property before our lease ends June 13."through which Texas Parks and Wildlife, and other government entities, fight for property rights against owners' will.
