Kyle Thomas' mum Zena was convicted of keeping a capybara 'with no license'
A Tiktoker's Lisburn ‘zoo’ is being investigated by the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
Kyle’s efforts have already caused some controversy as his mum wound up in court over the illegal importation of a capybara called Queen Elizabeth which featured heavily in videos posted on his TikTok from October 10, 2022 until October 25. Carrickfergus pet shop owner, Michael Dikinson, from Tudor link, was convicted of ‘transporting animals without authorisation from a competent authority’ on October 6, 2022 over the same capybara.
We asked the Department if any animal welfare inspectors had visited the under construction ‘zoo’ following issues with the capybara.Northern Ireland currently has “no legislative welfare licence requirements in place for an animal rescue and rehoming centres/animal sanctuaries” according to the department.
“Under the Welfare of Animals Act 1972, the licensing regime requires the licence holder to comply with conditions in regard to animal health, safety and welfare. We also asked whether Mr Thomas had the proper paperwork in place to import wallabies from the UK, which now feature in his videos.
