In 1982, after his short film was rejected by the fest, the fledgling filmmaker and a friend decided to rent tuxedos and screen the short on the wall outside the Uptown Theatre, then the event’s main venue. The police showed up to shoo him away, but the Canadian auteur has been a fixture at TIFF ever since.
