New data reveals that three individuals from Northern Ireland have traveled to Switzerland for an assisted death with Dignitas since 2002. Assisted dying is illegal in Northern Ireland and punishable by up to 14 years in prison. A report from the Assisted Dying Coalition shows that hundreds of people have traveled to Switzerland for assisted dying in the last 22 years.

New data has shown that three people from Northern Ireland have travelled to Switzerland for an assisted death with Dignitas since 2002. Dignitas is the most well-known organisation which provides assisted dying centres in Switzerland , where the practice is legal. In Northern Ireland , assisted dying is illegal and punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

Three of those people have travelled from NI, including two from Co Antrim and one from Co Down. Nathan Stilwell, Assisted Dying Campaigner for Humanists UK, an organisation which promotes the legalisation of assisted dying, said the current laws here are 'broken, brutal and barbaric'. ‘This report clearly shows that the UK’s assisted dying law is broken, brutal and barbaric," he said. "We must stop exporting compassion to Switzerland and give choice, freedom and dignity to the people in this country who are suffering.
