Preprint identifies 3 distinct types of long COVID.

UK researchers said they have identified at least three distinct 'types' of long COVID for people experiencing symptoms for 12 weeks or more., researchers from King's College London highlighted that post-COVID syndrome presents with heterogeneous profiles, which "need characterisation to enable personalised care among the most affected survivors".

Dr Marc Modat, King’s College London, who led the analysis, said: "Machine learning approaches, such as clustering analysis, have made it possible to start exploring and identifying different profiles of post- COVID syndrome. This opens new avenues of research to better understand the COVID -19 and to motivate clinical research that might mitigate the long-term effects of the disease.

A second group experienced cardiorespiratory symptoms, including chest pain and severe shortness of breath. This was the largest cluster in the wild-type period when the population was unvaccinated, and "may reflect lung damage", commented the authors. Existing data shows that the risk of long-COVID overall is reduced by vaccination commented the authors. However, they pointed out that they did not observe evidence of qualitatively different symptom clustering in vaccinated versus unvaccinated individuals, with either alpha or delta variants. Their data suggested that vaccination status has a "marginal effect" on the subsequent duration of symptoms for individuals, they said.

"Given the time-series component, our study is relevant for post-COVID prognostication, indicating how long certain symptoms can last,” she emphasised.
