Three Columbus police officers have been relieved of duty after each of them were charged with operating a vehicle under the influence while off-duty in separate incidents over four days in three counties.
Nixon and Whitlow were patrol officers, while Romans had been on temporary assignment to the Division of Police's recruitment unit. In addition to his OVI charge, Nixon also faces a felony charge of improperly handling a firearm in a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. A loaded 9 mm handgun was found during the traffic stop, Gahanna police reported. Nixon was released Saturday on his own recognizance on the condition that he does not possess firearms or ammunition.
The complaint alleges that Whitlow attempted to show the trooper his Columbus police officer badge and explain that he was an off-duty officer headed home. During the interaction, the trooper reported Whitlow showed poor motor skills and it took him several attempts to present his police badge.
