unless the Government provides emergency funding for a sector at “crisis point”, pharmacists have warned.

Thousands of community pharmacies across the country stand on the brink of closure because they are increasingly being left out of pocket by the state for the drugs they dispense to their patients, a trade association has said. The National Pharmacy Association has called on the Department for Health and Social Care to provide urgent support to pharmacies struggling to keep their doors open as a result of the often huge disparities between the sums of money they spend on drugs and the amount they are reimbursed.

Its plea comes after the Health Secretary, Steve Barclay, suggested stretched pharmacies ought to be doing even more toCommunity pharmacists procure medicine by dealing directly with pharmaceutical wholesalers, paying whatever price a firm commands to obtain the medicine. They are then reimbursed a tariff price, which is set on a monthly basis by the NHS on behalf of DHSC.
