Over 14,000 doctors, dentists and other NHS staff may have a decision to make on their pension
in the last ten years face a “complex” decision about whether to opt-in retrospectively after a Government rule change, data shared withIn 2015 the Government made changes to most public service pension schemes, including the NHS Pension Scheme, which moved the plans from generous final salary schemes to career average plans – where a pension is based on a workers salary over the whole of their career.
Anyone who chose to opt out would not have contributed towards their retirement fund. They can choose to opt back in by paying what they would have done during their opting out time. While this will be costly at the outset, it could significantly boost their retirement income. Alec Collie, head of medical at Wesleyan, said opting in or not was a “tough” and “complex” decision.
Dr Krishan Aggarwal, BMA pensions committee deputy chair, said it was right that the Government had put measures in place to allow people affected by changes to opt back in to their pensions.
