Campaigners are set to spend about £20,000 on their own tests in a bid to solve the mystery of the marine life disaster unfolding on the North East coast.
The ecological disaster has sparked a political row on Teesside, with a number of theories proposed for why it has happened. A Government-commissioned report published in January failed to give a definite answer, but said dredging linked to Teesside Freeport – a flagship “levelling-up” project backed by Tees Valley Conservative mayor Ben Houchen – was highly unlikely to be linked to the incidents.Local campaigners, including North East fishermen who are rapidly losing their livelihoods, were not convinced by the explanation and called for further investigation.
Dr Gary Caldwell, a marine biologist at Newcastle University and a Green Party member, has conducted research into pyridine, a chemical discovered in the Tees which has been shown to kill crabs.that an environmental risk assessment related to demolition work for the Freeport shows at least 70 toxic chemicals have been identified.
